I have gotten better about accumulating clutter (better, not perfect). For example, my shopping rule (can't buy it unless I know exactly where it will go/how I will use it) helps a lot. But even that can't save me from a few things -- one of my weaknesses is cosmetics and cosmetic-related things. Cosmetic bags, cute storage boxes, lip glosses (I have enough for 154 years), etc. Also accessories -- wallets, purses, planners, etc.

What's your weakness -- the stuff that you just can't resist? How do you manage that? I will admit, I'm still not strong enough (usually) to say no to a cute (insert accessory here) yet.......

Citygirl,I used to have the same weakness for cosmetics. One turning point- I had several lipsticks out trying to decide which one before work and left them out in the kitchen. A family member put them "away" in a random drawer so as not to have to look at them. Finally found them a week late, realized I had too much, and seriously, dumping them in the kitchen? That was rude of me. Several were just unflattering- toss. Once the really garish ones were gone I realized there were even more I never used. Unopened ones were dontated to a local charity that likes to have them for women going on job interviews. Now I have only what I'm currently using, (one in purse, one in bathroom) plus a few chapsticks out of sight here and there throughout the house. Made life simpler. Good luck!

Tools and toolboxes. I have a bunch of duplicate tools, a bunch of tool boxes/bags and a workroom that looks like a bomb went off. I have found myself organizing my tools to specific jobs. If I need to work on electrics, I have a toolbox for it that has most everything I need to do common tasks. It just has a bunch of the same tools that are in the box for working on communication cabling. Which contains most of the same stuff in my lighting work bag.

It's clean. Really. I only need one toolbox per job.

I can quit when I want to.

    Really I can.

    Notebooks, paper, pens.
I can always be found in office supply section of any store....just one more notebook!

Pens, blank notebooks--but now, whenever I see a Moleskine notebook at Borders I repeat to myself "I already have more than I need" until the urge to buy it goes down.

Scrapbooking papers/pens and other stuff--I haven't been as successful in stamping out the urge to buy more paper or stuff, although I didn't buy anything for a few months. The urge came right back as soon as I actively got back into it.

Totebags/purses--this is not as severe as many people's. I finally found an REI bag that was exactly the right size, carried most of what I like to carry around with me (any larger and I'd be a RV turtle) and that has turned my impulses away from other purses.

I used to have a book obsession when I was younger. I'd only buy books that I was sure to reread, that were my favorites. My collection was enormous. Two basement floods in two separate houses reduced my books by a huge number. I think that was the start of my holding back on books. Lately I go into a bookstore and find myself realizing that I don't buy fiction like I used to, but I *will* buy nonfiction (about scrapbooking!) once in a while. I've even sold some books to Powell Books. I have my eye on other books I bought when I was a Jr. High student for my future children. They aren't interested in them at all. Oh well. Off to Powells they go, if books are sellable.

Fabric and sewing supplies. I am improving. I now have only four file boxes full of quilt scraps, and two file boxes full of unfinished projects. Plus eight plastic drawers full of larger pieces of cloth. I haven't bought fabric in a couple of years :)

I am slowly turning all the scraps into scrap wheels. I cut all the pieces to 4 inches wide, length from 4-1/2 to 2 inches (trying to get a variety), then sew the scraps together in one long 4-inch wide ribbon, which can be rolled up and stored until I make a quilt out of it. It's fun to improvise, trying to vary the lengths, colors, and values (light or dark), while making sure that no one kind of fabric is dominant.

Of course, I now have twelve scrap wheels ... but because they're rolled so tightly, they all fit in one drawer. I gave away two wheels, to another quilter.

I used to have so many! Books, notebooks, journals, planners, sewing/cross stitching supplies... I've gotten much much better at resisting, mostly by reminding myself of what I already have and can use for the same purpose. Also by constantly reminding myself that buying this object will not transform me into a better person/student etc. Its still hard, some still sneak through.

For example, my weakness is planners, and I'm finding that the "pocket" size filofax I've used on and off since High School is a bit small for my needs. I'd like to get a "personal" size one. But rather than spend $100, I think I'm going to get the refill with one page per day for 2010 and see if that is enough space for me.

My weakness is grocery and toiletries sales. As a result, I have an overflowing pantry and a linen closet that looks like the drug store. We will use these things but is it clutter? I'm not sure and defiantly am prepared for whatever comes along!

I think we need to use what we have before I buy more....but how do I resist buy one get one free and double coupon deals? Yikes!

I'm in for china, silver, notebooks, stationery, fabric, and craft supplies. I've put myself on a moratorium for china and silver (I already have place settings for 16 in one set and 12 in another; plus more than 16 settings of the flatware). I've gotten much better about notebooks and stationery--will only buy if I have an actual need, rather than just because it's pretty. Fabric & craft supplies are still a struggle, but as I've been decluttering my stash, I've also been trying to plan out some future projects.

Moving to a bigger house has been good in terms of letting me see what all I have--in our last house, things were piled, stashed, and boxed all over the place--but it's also given me space to buy more!

Kitchen doodads and whatnots. I was on a path not so long ago where I thought I needed every pitter/chopper/juicer/shredder/whipper/slicer that I saw at Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table. They make everything look so pretty and useful!

Then I read an article about what items "real" chefs choose to have in their personal kitchens and for the most part, it was a very basic grouping of items. So now when I am tempted to get myself a wonderful kitchen thingamajig, I ask myself if I already have a tool to do the same job. I have gotten much better at saying NO! to the beautiful displays at the stores.

Ideas!! Whether they're saved as piles of pages from magazines; saved in email or electronic documents; saved on lists; saved in paper or electronic files... There's so much good information and excellent thoughts that would be perfect, at just the right time and if I could remember and implement it all. I can spend my whole life organizing it, but for what? What would happen if I just recycled it all? I might miss it, but would I really MISS it?

i have gone through phases in my life... before i was married it was china and crystal and antique furniture. afterwards i kept cutting down and cutting down..though i think if i look i still have a collection of teapots...but i am NOT allowed to acquire anymore. I always had a thing for stationery and office supplies..but i don't hoard anymore - i have enough to last the rest of my life and i try to cut down on the excess whenever i do a clean out day.
but my biggest permanent problem is 'bags' bags, totes, containers, train cases... i am a sucker for a decent messenger bag or backpack. lucy liked hats, imelda liked shoes..i'm in for bags.

i have it as a new years chore to take out all my bags and cut back to just what i actually use.

I still love all those types of things and spend long linger looks at them in the thrift shops..(it's not buying it's rescuing..right?) but nowadays I ask myself how long will i use it, where will i store it and how do i get rid of it when i don't want it anymore?

S - I have the same weakness for ideas. I love magazines and I rip out pages all the time. Recipes, catalog images of room set ups, craft ideas, tips, exercise routines, outfits. I have a copier paper box (or two) filled. I started pasting things in large hardcover sketchbooks (based on category - one for fashion, one for home decorating) but it's tough to keep up with. I'd feel better about it if I could get the information organized fully and right now it's easy to not think about because I just shove the box under the bed.

I hope to get things under control in 2010.

Books. I'm good with my own, but I can always find a way to justify more for my children (4 and 1) even though they have hundreds already.

Books, its been pretty easy getting rid of just about everything else, except i have a bookshelf full and a big container under the bed full of books. i do plan on getting rid of more, but I've pretty much culled most of the books i've already read and won't read again, or books i decided not to read at all. so everything that's left i really want to read. i have been reading them, but its been going slow, especially when i have college classes that take up a lot of my time. i know i won't really need to buy any more b/c i can use the library, but that doesn't help me read the ones i have any faster. i would feel better if a lot of them would just disappear till i wanted to read them though.
