A&E has a show called 'Hoarders' that is great to watch whenever you're feeling blue about your current uncluttering project. No matter how out-of-control things get at our house, I can watch an episode of Hoarders and be relieved that we don't live like some of those people.
The show is interesting when you listen to the people's stories. A lot of them start out by keeping things around because "they may become useful sometime in the future". Over the years, it turns to an illness as they grow more and more unable to throw stuff out. Each episode tracks what seems to be an intervention that one's family gives to the hoarder. They bring in a large truck and cleanup crew to clean house. One episode even featured the lady climbing into the back of the trash hauling truck so she could sort through the trash and try to justify keeping some stuff.
Many of the episodes end up with a lot of stuff being put into a self storage unit to get it out of the house. I am biased to that idea since I've managed a self storage facility for over 6 years now.
