Many years ago, I bought a fine Swiss portable manual typewriter (reputable brand, but I forget the name and I don't want to get up). I dragged it all over the South Pacific and used it to type up notes for the dissertation I never finished.
When I returned home from my travels, I tucked it away in a closet. My ex had just bought a computer and I was introduced to the exciting world of Wordstar!
I kept the typewriter because it's a GOOD typewriter, dangnabit, and perhaps civilization will fall and there will be no computers.
But after more than twenty years, during which time the typewriter has never been opened, I think it unlikely that I will ever need a manual typewriter again.
Perhaps it has rusted solid by this time :) Certainly it would be an adventure to find a typewriter repairperson or a place that sells ribbons for it.
Need some encouragement to jettison this significant artifact.
