It seems like many of the people on the Unclutter forums are using Evernote. I'm curious how you are organizing your information. I just can't seem to get a set up that works well for me. I am used to just bookmarking everything, placing folders inside of folders and organizing that way. Evernote doesn't seem to let this happen. So, send me your ideas!

i still haven't got the hang of using it for long term storage though it has a few hundred notes in it. i am using it for various research projects.
I collect and collate all the my data into it, then when i do a writing project I excerpt all those notes use them and delete them.so i'm using it like a big messy pile on my desk, instead of a file cabinet.

I am thrilled with the desktop version but hate the iphone app. Nevertheless, I have a few folders, but have not really used tags (if every note in searchable, I don't really need to "tag" my apple pie recipe with "apple," do I?) My folders are mostly quotes, recipes, writing, etc. I do love it for recipes as I can pull the recipe up at the store and see what I need...it's also nice to see a recipe on a website and quick paste it into an email and send it in to evernote, which is where I find the greatest use for it.
I think you may be trying to over-organize it. The whole beauty of it is it's intense searchableness...I rely on that mainly and just search by word when I'm trying to find something. I have the folders there to organize it at a glance, but I rarely go into the folders individually to find something.

I do have a recipes Notebook on Evernote, but I use tags in Evernote the same way I use folders in my bookmarks. You can make a tag within a tag within a tag. I have a recipes tag, then inside that one, main dishes, inside that, pasta, chicken, etc. I now use evernote like I used to use bookmarks. The difference is, when I book mark something, I usually never look at it again, because it's just a link. With evernote, I know it's there, and I have the actual text and pictures right there when I click on the tag.

I have been using Evernote for a while and am still developing best practices that suit me. One way that has been great, because I am using it for home as well as work-related stuff, is to use both Notebooks and Tags. The Notebooks are kind of big collection buckets - general categories like Garden, Money, Genealogy, and Speaking (for my Toastmaster notes). The Tags are more specific. For example, a note in Genealogy might be tagged with a family name. This way I can scan through all notes in Genealogy about a specific family name. I also use action Notebooks called _Act On, _Follow Up, and _Waiting For, so named so they will sort to the top of my Notebook list. A family name note might be in the _Follow Up Notebook because it needs some additional research, then it can be moved to the Genealogy Notebook.

I would love to really use Evernote because I think that it could solve some of my frustrations with the mounds and mounds of paper that I have for work and personal projects.
But I'd like to have a clear understanding of how to use it - and was wondering whether anyone knows of a website that simply and clearly explains how to use it --- and maybe even answers user questions? ThanksPosted 2 years ago # -
Hello, I work for Evernote. Since Evernote is such an open system we like to highlight all the ways you can use it as well as systems and uses our users have come up with. We actually did a whole month devoted to organization, we called it the Summer to Unclutter you can see all the posts here with guest posts by some professional organization people, including Erin Doland http://blog.evernote.com/category/tips-and-uses/organization/. We also have a tips blog here http://evernote.tumblr.com/. Thanks for trying it out, hopefully this gets you going.

So does evernote save your original stuff in the same format? Can you export from it? I usually like to know that I can create a backup in case of server crashes or companies going belly-up. Like you can export Delicious links to a .html file.
I was trying to keep my stuff on USB sticks (backed up to hard drive) but it's not really working - I'm always having to email myself stuff for when I want to work on a different computer, and I don't know where I put a file I was working on. It's a mess.
So I thought I'd give Evernote a serious run. I just need to know that my stuff is safe on there.

@klutzgrrl Evernote Data portability is very important to us. We believe that you should feel comfortable putting your data into Evernote with the knowledge that, if you want, you can always take it out. We offer XML export as well as HTML export (which contains all of your meta-information such as tags, source urls, etc.)
Of course we are very pleased to offer lots of features in addition to versions for nearly every device you have so that you have everything you need right in Evernote. We also have lots of great partnerships and integrations to add additional features and functionality to your Evernote account. http://www.evernote.com/about/integration/

i downloaded evernote today....when i realised i couldn't sync my macbook sticky notes with my iphone notes, no matter what tricks i tried.
i kept seeing evernote being mentioned as THE solution on all the mac forums.what i am LOVING so far:
1. the ability to take a photo of a business card with my iphone and have it captured in a note.
2. the ability to take a photo, make a note, call my husband and tell him to open evernote on the laptop and see the photo note almost immediately.
3. the incredible searchability...i don't use tags, i just search and it's all there.
4. the friendly simply use-ability of the thing.Posted 1 year ago #
