My dad swore that every time he had to work out of town and was gone for a couple of days my mom would have another tree cut down. They had a few acres and lots of trees and my mom's explanation was that people were always hitting a tree when they drove in and out of the long driveway.
So this un-cluttering was bad to my dad but good to my mom and the people with the dented cars and job security for the tree cutters.

My grandma decluttered an antique, hand-cranked sewing machine - you know the old black wooden ones, with flowers painted on. This is one piece of inherited stuff that I would love to have kept.

I think uncluttering covers a pretty wide spectrum. So, if you're happy with no chairs in your living space, go for it! It's only detrimental when it brings you dissatisfaction. There are people in this world who are very happy with very little. It's all about what feels right to YOU.
In response to the discussion on gifts, I try to always give consumables or experiences, and I like them in return. Really, who's going to say know to a bottle of wine, some dark chocolate, and a deep tissue massage? :)

It can also be a bad thing if you get stressed too much over it and for example throw something out that you actually need. At least in those situations I could see that too much uncluttering can be a problem
