Hi,

After moving in with my boyfriend and successfully paring down my library, wardrobe, furniture, and kitchen items to the absolute minimum, I have come to the point where I must decide what to do with my artwork. I completed my MFA in photography in 2008 and still have a small mountain of large framed prints from my thesis exhibition. The work was expected to sell at some point... however the art market in the Midwest continues to shrink.

At the moment, an entire closet is filled with all of my work. I have no ambition of exhibiting this work again and have gifted as many prints as humanly possible. My question is this: at what point do I get to stop carrying these giant photographs around?

If they were designed to be sold, why not hold an art Garage sale? Someone may get a furture recognised masterpiece. Do you have any other arty friends who would like to also join in a sale?

At least then you'll know your work is appriciated and loved on display in someone's house!

At what point do you stop carrying them around? That point in here and now.

Why don't you get an Etsy account and sell them? Just be sure to see what prices others are selling their framed prints at so you don't over or under charge.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of selling them, how about contacting a private school (I don't think public ones can take them) or a nursing home and seeing if they'd like to accept your work as a donation?

We're not professional artists but we do have quite a few of our pieces framed and / or mounted. They are now going on a rotation system so items that we still want but were on display at our last place are in a cupboard and others that weren't displayed previously are out (still working on which ones as we've only recently moved).

Try rotating them on your own walls. It gets them seen and maybe your friends can tell their friends to come around to see / buy them - effectively make your home a gallery if possible.

Do you still live near the shop that framed them for you? See if they would like to use some to show off their framing work if you can offer them for sale in their shop. Your work is seen by a larger audience; passersby see how the shop's frames accent various photos - win-win. This is how I ended up with a particular poster (which sadly I don't have room to display). My DH and I passed a shop window, I admired this print and he later returned to buy it for me.

Art Garage sale, Etsy, Home Gallery, Framing shop - all great ideas. And you might also try coffeehouses or local eateries; we've seen many such places in our travels that hang local artists' work. Some do it on a consignment basis but many do it just to have free, "fresh" art on their walls.

Congrats on the MFA, too!

There are regular "Starving Artist" sales here in Houston. They are usually at a hotel and feature local artists who sell their work at very reasonable prices. I'm sure the organizer of this event is getting a commission on the sales. It's a great idea and another way to sell your work.
