This has been a very helpful thread, as I have a lot of cassette tapes (mainly books on tape) to get rid of. I like the idea of donating them to a jail or prison, and am going to look into that. For anyone who has cassettes they'd like to keep, but don't have a device to play them on, I recently discovered that there are devices that will convert cassettes to MP3s.

Thanks again everyone! I am slowly getting rid of the tapes, some days are easier than others. I keep finding music (which I have not looked at in at least ten years) and going "oh! I've had that tape since I was X years old!" but I'm being pretty good about moving through it and realizing that if I have not missed it in so long, I do not need to keep it. It's the music that is the memory, not the possession of the media. Anything that I think I will really miss I put on a list to consider purchasing in digital format, and toss the tape anyway. I'll revisit this list later to see what I really want to buy.

It's true. Unlike a CD, you can't break off a shard of tape and shank somebody with it. Or so I hear. Unfortunately, you'd get paid in cigarettes :P

Somebody told me recently that cassette tapes are the only kind of recording media allowed in prisons. I don't know if this is true, but it might be interesting to investigate.

When my clients are giving away cassette tapes, I often offer them up on Freecycle. They don't all get taken, but quite a number of them do.

I see tapes at the local Goodwill but would hesitate to buy them, even though that is all I can play on my old car stereo. In AZ, tapes sit in the ungodly heat of a parked car for who knows how long, and that does not bode well for the quality of technology that is expired anyway. Toss them!

I'm glad you asked, because the unloading of unwanted items in an inappropriate way is one of my personal pet peeves. We have a charity bookshelf at work and people are always dropping off VHS tapes that clutter up the place and never get taken.

To answer your question, mass-produced audio cassettes are unfortunately not valuable (to stores like Goodwill). Your best bet would be to sell or give them away to a flea market vendor who specializes in old media. If you don't know any audiophiles, I'd say just toss them.

Ask! Both cassette and 8track have been making a comeback in some circles - a friend's hipster band gives out cassette singles of themselves at shows. Your thrift store may move them fast or may never have sold one this decade.

I've seen them in our thrift stores, but I have no idea how long they've been there! I have some myself, though we actually have 2 tape decks, and my car has both a tape and CD player. I'll probably pick through the tapes and buy digital anything I want to keep.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure I've seen tapes at Goodwill, although of course it varies by region. I've also seen tapes in various used music stores. I doubt you'd get much money for them, but such a store might take them off your hands. You could also try listing them on Freecycle (if you have a chapter in your area) or the free section of Craigslist. Someone might want them. Hey, you never know, I myself own a tape deck (although its use kind of confuses me :) Tapes also might have a potential for art projects, for someone.

Thrift stores around here don't want old technologies whether that's tube TVs, VCR's, tapes of any kind, ancient stereos, even one doesn't want non-blu ray DVD players. We have to pay to dispose of electronics now, so I'm sure they don't want to pay if the stuff doesn't sell. I would call your local shops to ask what they are accepting.

Does anyone know if USA thrift stores typically accept cassette tapes? It's time to unclutter my 20lb box of tapes that I have been dragging around for years and years but I'm not sure of the best way to pass them on. Donate? Recycle somehow?

Put 2 kitchen trash bags in the bin. Some of it was regular trash, but again, it got out sooner than usual and decluttered some old mail. Decluttered obligation by transferring funds. Looking at wireless alternatives to declutter aggravation. Decluttered various and sundry receipts by turning them in for merchandise (special promotion) - oh uh, more things in - must release 6 things for the 3 things just brought in. Decluttered books - sold 3 - transferred them to buyer. Gave away blueberry green tea wheat grass sour cream pound cake as well as more seeds.

Commit for the day: Another bag of clutter to the bin and paperwork. Organize daily planner. Go to class.

Finished and put in the bin the one kitchen trash bag. Some of it was regular household trash, but hey, it's out of the house early and in the bin :) Tried to mail the gift but both the post offices I stopped at had long lines. Did unclutter an insurance payment. [It's going up real high now - they say because of Obamacare :( ] Uncluttered some required reading. Decluttered the mailing of late Christmas cards. Returned a book and looks like I've a buyer for the books I am selling. Gave away fruit and seeds.

I was the 21st poster on this thread and today only a handful of the first 20 are actively posting frequently somewhere on the unclutterer site (although at least one posts regularly on her own great reading blog on decluttering). Eight months ago when this thread was started I committed to releasing at least one thing a day for a year on the ATAD thread. It definitely was difficult in the beginning but as I went along it got progressively and exponentially easier to do, although still far from effortless. But every day (with few exceptions that I would make up for by extra uncluttering the next day or the day before) I released at least one item and faithfully posted here. And the daily search to release one item usually led to more than one thing, sometimes much much more than one item. People came, people went; but like the postman I posted daily through hail, rain, sleet, wind, snow, floods, storms, fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, locust, lemmings (you know, all those sorts of natural disasters that the legal profession calls "Acts of God" when they excuse provision of service where an AOG makes their doing impossible).

Commit for the day: Another kitchen bag of trash to the bin. Paperwork!

Reorganized my china cabinet this morning:
several cups/saucers that my sis has given me since she is a collector (i am not). I kept a few that I actually do love, but the rest are out. Several old vases from my pie safe. a few candles I haven't used in over 2 years. some older platters of my Moms that I had kept, but still have some that I DO use. my dilemna is I have several large family gatherings a year that I need candles/holders/vases/centerpieces for so I have kept all that stuff. Now I have gone thru and gotten rid of the ones I chose not to use that last year or so. I still have enough left for 3 tables. Gosh, this feels great. some glass beads/pebbles for the bottom of vases that I only used once in 4 years. several old votives- got a new stash at christmas this year as a present.
a few pottery pieces that my Mom had given me over the years that i used very seldom.
oops i put this in the old thread....
