It's like you read my mind! Starting a career from a hobby has been a dream of mine for the past two or three years. And I am floundering. I applaud you for setting up the etsy shop - that is definitely a step in the right direction! I wish I had advice to offer you, but I am in the same position that you are right now. I am in the middle of writing a book (fiction) and have been trying to work a little each day on that. But I am lost as well. I think that a closed group room sounds like a great idea. I would love to hear how other people are doing with this goal as well and to learn from everyone!

Round 1 is here: http://unclutterer.com/discuss/topic/from-hobby-to-profession

Background:
I believe it was JuliaJayne who recently mentioned having toyed with this idea and I find myself in that position again. It's very hard for me to find decent Summer jobs when the semesters in Denmark are longer than back home and therefore I'm doing a bit of this and that to start my own one-woman show up. An Etsy shop is taking its first breaths right now and I have another idea for on-line purposes too, which will have to wait until later this year. I've started writing a book (non-fiction) with a deadline of max five years from now, but then there's also the decluttering.

What now?
I'd really love to help people in this immediate way and even though my own house is still messy (primarily due to emotional attachment I think) I have a feeling I'd be positively ruthless with others' messy abodes. If there is someone else in this position right now, I suggest we start up one of those mastermind groups, which sole purpose is to help people be productive about their shared goal.
http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/how-to-start-and-run-a-mastermind-group.html

Even though (and probably because, as well) we're in different parts of the globe, I think we could be excellent sparring partners since we've been around here for a while already and have gotten used to the emotional roller-coaster ride of the receiving end. We obviously couldn't meet in person, but I don't think it would matter because we already know how to "exist online". A closed group room of some kind would be cool though.

Thoughts?

My job involves helping others to organise their work spaces and unclutter. In my role, I get to inform others of the processes to follow, and then guide them through the process. This is in a work envirnment rather than a home and we use it to create effective work spaces that are safe, clean, organised and where we can find things. I love the fact I can combine my hobby into my work and teach others at the same time. There are many benefits in work environment too, e.g. one of the greatest achievements in an office space is to realise all the missing stationary that hides in people's drawers and then relising there is so much there that we don't need to re-purchase for a LONG TIME and put in processes to ensure we don't get back to over purchasing!!!! The same principles apply at home where if we know where something is, a place for everything and everything in it's place...then we don't repurchase unnecessarily...

I agree with @claycat, even "professionals" can get caught out, e.g. I recently needed some nutmeg for a recipe, I didn't have any so went to the supermarket and bought some and put it in the cupboard, then a couple of weeks went by, then I checked before last grocery shop I couldn't find any, ... so bought another lot of nutmeg next grocery shop... then when I got home I discovered I now have two containers of nutmeg - I mean, how much nutmeg can one family use!!!!

LOL, bandicoot! I realized my post was not relevant to this topic, so I edited it out. :)

Nina, haven't you heard about the accountants who can't keep track of their own accounts or the doctors who don't go to the doctor, etc? I'm much better at helping others organize and unclutter than I am at doing it myself. If that is something you would like to do, go for it!

Yes, Mrs. Mack, it was actually a question directed at those who do organize home professionally. I seriously seem to have a hang for it when it comes to other people's homes and have a much better grip at asking the right questions as well, but my own poor house is another subject entirely. All my emotions are tied to it, which in my humble opinion makes it so much harder to view as objectively as possible. Hope there's someone out there who can help :D

trillie, I haven't heard of the page you recommended yet, but will take a look at it for sure! Thanks!

Professional... in what? Uncluttering?

Most of us are "nobodies" just trying to get a handle on our own things. There are a few professional organizers in the bunch, but they're not the majority by any means.

If you mean just taking any hobby and making a living off of it, well, what you would need to do would depend entirely on what the hobby is.

In other words, you need to be a little more specific with your question.

EDIT: Ah, I see you've put this question under the professional organizer section. Well, hope someone can answer your question.

Hey, I was wondering whether you'd like to share your story on how you went professional? What kind of a background do you have? I've been toying with the idea of trying it out on a small scale, but seem to lack confidence that my experience from my own home and immediate surroundings would be enough, so my next question is, do you have some type of degree supporting you? Psychology, economics, etc.? Thanks in advance!

My motivation is a desire to live life clutter free! I am tired of having so much, particularly the little things that overwhelm us! This year's resolution is to get rid of half of what I own. I started a blog to stay accountable and it's been very helpful keeping me on track.

stagetecture on "How do you make organization save you time?"

It's 7:00am, and you need to be out of the house in 30 minutes to make it to work on time. Your kids are asking where their clean clothes are for school. Your spouse is asking where are the car keys, it's your turn to take the minivan. You're in the kitchen trying to make a hot breakfast, but the pantry has Tylenol, crayons, and pepper in the same place, and they all just fell into the oatmeal.

Solution: Organization!

Every aspect of your life could use some form of it. Whether it's at home, office, gym, or your social calendar!

Kids:

Help them, help themselves. After laundry comes out of the dryer, have children put clothes away as soon as possible. For larger families, have separate areas for dirty and clean clothes. (Separate laundry baskets, labeled bins, or clean each child's clothes separately to avoid confusion.)

Morning Rituals

If you are like most of us, that have hectic mornings, make rituals for you and your family. Can't find the keys? Assign an area that you and your spouse go to when you come home, and when you leave out. The same with purses, wallets, gym bags, kid's backpacks. Assign areas that before the family retires at night, they know in the morning, it will be the place as the "go-to" spot, before heading out the door.

Kitchen organization

The Kitchen is the most used room of any house, repeatedly through the day, and the one place that organization gets overlooked. Keep medicine for the family in a cabinet away from extreme temperature changes (not the bathroom!) Choose a cabinet that young children can't reach, but convenient for adults. Place crayons, pens, markers and other art supplies in a utility room, upper shelf of a cabinet or pantry. This way, the walls won't accidentally have writing on them, without you knowing Timmy was in the markers!

Add a spice organizer, simple or elaborate, to your kitchen. If you can find the pepper in 3 seconds instead of 3 minutes, think of the time you'll save in the entire morning.

Entry #16, January 10, 2010

Organization can surprise you!

Motivation - "Willingness of action especially in behavior"-Wiktionary. The excuses behind what we have motivation for and what we don't is a mile long list, would you agree? Although, we all find the "motivation" when it comes to an action that we desire, correct? I.e. money, food, vacations, attention, etc... If we were able to make organization about having your desired outcome, wouldn't that help accomplish it? Here's some tips on finding YOUR motivation to organize what's important to you.

Excuses: They are the number one reason why motivation takes a back seat to your goals. Go through your daily life, and write a list of every excuse you make as to why you don't want to get organized. It can be time, money, supplies, know-how, friends/family support, energy, etc.. After you form the list, make another list. This list will be the positive of how you could accomplish the goals if you want to:

*Time: "I could set aside 15 minutes a weekday, and 30 minutes on the weekend to get organized."

*Money: Start with the free side of organization - de-clutter, have garage sales, give away items. Make an organization fund, that you add your morning coffee money to. Skip the expensive coffee, and in few months you will have money to splurge at an organization store!

*Know-how: With do-it-yourself cable programs, infinite internet sites, and resources galore, there is no excuse why you can't get steered in the right direction! If you don't want to do it yourself, then hire a pro or ask question's to a pro for minimal cost. (Stagetecture can help you get started!)

*Energy: What get's you excited!? What makes your day run smoothly? Did you know if your disorganization is spilling into your family's/co-worker's/or spouse's life, you are disrupting more than yourself? Isn't it worth it to find the energy for them too? Why not give yourself a reward for accomplishing small tasks at a time? You will find the energy if you don't do everything in one or two sittings. Start small - medicine cabinet or pet area... move to bigger areas as you gain more confidence. Keep it up... your motivation goals were closer than you thought!
