I read a conversation on the Hoarders Facebook page that got me thinking. In it, people were talking about what a BORE the Chris & Dale episode was because the hoarders were only moderate. There was no bugs or skeletons or feces, so it was "boring". It appeared they were watching for the shock factor.

I've read other people who say they clean after every episode - the final "reveals" inspire them to improve their living spaces.

I am inspired by the finish and I love the stories- sad as they may be- of the people profiled. I'm still trying to define my answer, but why do you watch Hoarders?

My brain thinks it's a good show but my stomach doesn't like it!!! I have the feeling some of what they show is "colored" for taping. It reminds me of all the decorating shows: Will they finish on time? Will they run out of paint? Our homeowner hates this idea!!! From there a war of terse words occurs as obviously fake tension builds - that's when I switch to an old movie!!!!

Found this link on the Facebook page for The possum from Hoarders, who is capitalizing on his moment of TV fame. Has hired an agent and is negotiating for a spinoff series :)

This actually belongs in a forum for the third season of Hoarders, but we don't have a pigeonhole for that yet. Have watched four episodes so far. Horrible but riveting, in that slowing-down-on-the-freeway-to-gawk-at-a-crash way.

Ok, sorry if this is in the wrong category, but since it's a TV show, I thought here would be the best place for it.

So, there's a new show on the channel Planet Green called Gutted. The premise of the show is that people come into a cluttered person's home (said cluttered person gets nominated by friends and family) and take away all of their things (hence the name gutted). In the place of certain objects, red X's are placed. If the person can remember what was there, they get the item back. If they don't, it's sold at an auction and they get the money. More info is on their website at Planet Green. Have you heard about this show? What do you think about it?

Interesting article at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/07/AR2010060703807.html

Journalist describes a lifetime of failed attempts to cure his hoarding. Finally he admits that he's a hoarder and does a cleanup with his wife. Does it work? Last sentence of the article says that the piles were back in a couple of weeks.

Hard to change lifetime habits!

This isn't about the show; it's about a current news item. An elderly Chicago couple in the hospital after being found buried in trash.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2010/05/elderly-couple-found-buried-alive-under-mounds-of-trash-in-their-apartment/1

There's a slide show with the article. Garage, backyard, porch, house crammed with STUFF.

I found myself nervously looking about my condo, wondering if I could find something to throw away :)

Zora on "Season 2: Episode 12 -- "Dennis and Nadene""

Gosh, this one was a trainwreck. Neither intervention seemed likely to end happily. Nadene managed to concentrate for an hour and half before she demanded to stop, and she refused to part with anything. The other hoarders, Erin and Melinda and their mom, squabbled over who owned what rather than sorting and clearing. The mattress full of carpet beetles was revolting.

But the worst was Dennis and Nadene. Dennis was clearly in a major depression, in precarious health, and had isolated himself in his cluttered room with his guns. Nadene filled the rest of the house with junk, cigarette smoke, anger, profanity, and denial. Who was most at fault? At that stage, I'd have to say that it was Nadene. Dennis seemed too feeble to add to the clutter, or to protest vigorously if some of his were cleared away. Nadene could have done a lot of clearing if she'd tried ... but it seemed that she'd rather smoke and stew in her anger. I wondered if she was starting to slide into dementia.

Watching that episode was difficult for me, in that I lived with a packrat (not a hoarder but close) for twenty years, much of which I spent resenting his clutter and angry at him because I couldn't clear it out. It wasn't until he left that I realized that I'd fallen into the clutter habit too. In just one area, sewing materials and projects. Years after he moved out I'm still pruning.

Clutter is contagious! Dangnabit!

Every week I think this show will get old, but it seems to keep drawing me in.

Interesting twists in these stories this week: Warren's wife blaming him but being a real hoarder herself. The van parked in the driveway just seemed so sad and I wished he would just tow it just so he wouldn't have to look at the place where his Dad died.

And Gail was once so vibrant. She seemed so frail mentally and I'm glad she has a family that loves her.

Zora on "Season 2: Episode 8 - "Janet and Christina""

Just watched this. One partial success, one apparent failure. Janet seemed, at the end, to be grasping the idea that "the thing is not the memory" and may continue to improve. Christina seemed to be resisting dealing with the mess. She just sat in front of the coffee table and sorted tiny things. She was still blocking out the reality.

What frightened me, watching this, is that I could see aspects of Christina in myself. Not wanting to have people in my house ... well, yes, because I'm afraid my house isn't acceptable. It's not clutter that's the problem, it's the fact that when my ex-husband left me, he left me with a half-remodeled house, which I've been too poor to finish fixing up. I also feel guilty because there are household projects, like sewing curtains for the hall closets, that I've started and haven't finished. So, am I doing that? No, I'm finishing another sewing project, and sewing hand-tatted lace onto linen pillowcases. Avoiding the big tasks, focusing on something tiny, repetitive, manageable ... hmmm, seems familiar.

Tough show tonight! Linda's children should have been NOWHERE NEAR her house. They were frustrated and angry and unsupportive. And it didn't help that her organizer didn't believe she could do it either and verbalized that a lot. For the first time, i felt like they didn't offer her proper help, although it was clear Dr Z was doing her best.

Todd seemed to be doing this for the wrong reasons - doing it to please his girlfriend and get her back. I wonder too how much of his issue was disorganization vs hoarding.

Gracious Jim was the biggest guy for excuses I've ever seen. And also the most emotional of the males on the show to date.

And the depth of Deborah's family's dysfunction was mind-boggling. Her son Sam seemed relieved to not have to be the "parent" while the crew was there, and I suspect that is what led to his meltdown that they were leaving.

Both of these folks seemed motivated for something better and accepted after-care, so I hope they find success.

Quite an episode this week.

I think Dr. Dick was the most in denial hoarder they have encountered yet - he tried everything including emotional manipulation and bullying to avoid getting rid of things. I have never seen anyone with that many collections - and there were some that were shown, but never discussed, so he really collected everything!

And Bob's family was so sad - I suspect the are big issues between him and his wife about both partners being heard and I hope this clean-up/fumigation will get them started on a new trajectory.

Gail- that her son would find fighting in Irag LESS scary than facing this with his Mom, is enlightening.

I was hopeful that the show would take on more of the psychological aspect this season, but this first episode is disappointing in that aspect. While they allude at the end of the episode to "after care", the "big reveal" seems to the focus.

I felt awful for Augustine - she seemed very remote and robotic and it may have been editing, but she seemed to have very little role in the clean-up at all...she spent her time rocking and resigned on her porch. That seems to fly in the face of the idea that the instigation for a clean-up like this needs to come from the owner in order for healing to begin. In the words of her son, "I'm skeptically hopeful".

What did you all think?
