The unit Ella recommends looks a bit like IKEA's "Antonius" system might come close to offering the same convenience - an example configuration linked below:

We have this Trofast unit from Ikea in my son's room - he wasn't tall/strong enough to open the drawers on the bureau we started out with. We have 2 small, 2 medium, and one large "drawer" in it - they slide in and out. It's quite sturdy, he's had it 3 years. I know there's a taller version, as well. This one is about knee height (the top is even with his windowsill, so plants can sit on it and get good sun.)

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20087525/

I have a very nifty lightweight "taboret" on casters... wooden top, sturdy metal frame, and 5 wire drawers that slide both directions. It's so versatile, I've used it in my kitchen, my home office, and now my closet. Here it is on another thread (second photo)...

http://unclutterer.com/discuss/topic/weekend-uncluttering-plans/page/3#post-45863

The white cabinet to the right formerly sat on top of the wire taboret (left), that's how strong it is. I've had it for over 20 years, can't remember where I got it. But it's one of the all-time best organizers I own.

From Wal-Mart. They have pretty darn cheap plastic stacking drawers. I used this in college and it fit in a standard size closet (and under a raised bed). This particular unit will be too tall, but you can also buy them individually.

You might want to check Target, Home Depot or lowes -- they have less expensive solutions. I got something like this for my Mother-In-Law: http://www.target.com/p/Sterilite-Wide-3-Drawer-Cart-White/-/A-10497007#?lnk=sc_qi_detailbutton

Hi,
I just moved into my first apartment and I'm looking for a clothes solution besides laundry baskets.

I just want a set of three containers that will fit in my closet and slide in and out. I don't really mind what material they're made of, or if I have to put pieces together. They can go about up to my waist (3ft) - above that are hanging dress shirts and suits and things. My closet is 2 feet 3 inches deep and has a sliding mirror door that's about 3ft wide (so closet is 6ft wide in total), so drawers should be no wider than 3 feet.

I went to the Container Store and got totally overwhelmed; there are too many options and they all look pricey for a set of simple drawers.

Can you make a recommendation about what I should look for? Help!

Thanks,
Kevin

Losing socks has become epidemic at my house since my middle daughter is now wearing women's size shoes. Now we never know who's socks are whose! I keep single socks in a basket on my dresser above the sock drawer and every now and then I find a match. If they hang around too long, I toss them or use them as dustcloths. Now I know to check my daughter's drawer before tossing, though, in case she's also saving single sox that just may match the ones I'm saving! ;)

:-))) looks like Erin has used me as the "bad example" for her column today. (GASP! i saved my single socks for over 5 years!)
But I have been told here that if you have a place for something and it is useful and not in the way, then it is not clutter, and like one of the people who commented, i have used the singles when i have painting work to do.

I'm looking forward to reading ideas on how to get rid of my stuff! I realize I like shopping and buying gifts to give at the holidays, birthdays, etc. but, I do not have a gift closet or a place to keep this stuff. And, i have too many clothes. i am not wearing some of them, so they are going to goodwill. i've made a promise to take at least one bag to goodwill every saturday until i can put ALL of my clothes either in a closet or a drawer.

Please support me in my quest. thank you in advance for your comments (and good thoughts and/or prayers)

i have had socks disappear for several reasons.

when i was married, my husband's troubled nephew rented an apartment and he would sneak in and steal socks and towels and money.

when one of my cats was very young..whenever i would leave the house he would run and take one of my socks out of the laundry and carry it to the window where he could see me, as if to say..take me with you.. i have watched him do it, he would be in the window with the sock dangling from his jaw. this was cute..but i didn't figure it out until i found a pile of socks behind the couch were he would drop them.

i once figured out that odd socks didn't get into the same wash because they clung to other clothes or bed linens, or be left in the bottom of the basket or somewhere. I started buy my socks in ridiculous numbers 12+ at a time, and phased out the 'odd' colors. basically all white socks are the same make and model and match each other. all woolen socks will match all other woolen socks. that way when one gets parted if i do enough laundry it eventually finds its way back into the drawer.

Haha, that cat story was hilarious!! :) My kitty also walks off with socks but as they are indoor cats I can normally find them lying around in a corner somewhere. He looks awfully proud walking around with a bundle of socks in his mouth! Hehe.

Since I have to work in a suit I have mostly silly socks with weird patterns on them. It's my little secret in the office. :P Today for example I am wearing pink socks with little brown hedgehogs on them.

I leave odd socks at the bottom of my closet until I do the laundry next. If I haven't found their partner then they go in the bin. (I live in a small studio apartment so there aren't many places they could be if they're not in the laundry.)

I must confess that I'm a pair-o-holic. So I put them into the washing machine as pairs and re-pair them when they come out of the dryer. If I can't find the pair - I go looking for them. Of course, almost all my socks are black so when I do lose one, it's not a great problem... it's just a compulsion with me I think.

My odd socks become dusters... Now I have black socks with cloured parts, so they match - I hate two 'look the same' socks, that 'feel different' when wearing (looser, tighter etc). The dusting socks are great... sure microfibre's good too, but these i use, and toss in the wash and don't miss them whilst they linger in the dirty clothes basket (I don't have as many microfibre cloths)

I only match adult socks, the kids get single socks to throw in their drawers. Every so often one of them will get dressed, come in and say 'look! Matching socks!' as if it's a small miracle they managed to find a matching pair :) If I'm wearing boots I'll quite often wear odd socks, I'm not fussy. I put odd socks in a bag and periodically chuck out ones which have been in there alone too long.

DH has single socks more than I do, and his are because he gets a hole in one and throws it away, but keeps the other. He could care less if his socks he wears inside his cowboy boots match. He does wearing matching ones the rest of the time.

What more often happens is that DH is being helpful and folding laundry (good) but doesn't recognize the difference between his black socks and my black socks, or between several pairs of mine that, yes, are all black, but different textures, weights, etc. The worst is when he pairs one of mine with one of his. And we have vastly different sized feet! I try to get the socks matched up before the laundry comes upstairs.
