I posted in the January Goals thread, once, and then avoided it like the plague because I knew I wasn't doing what I'd committed myself too.

Coming home from vacation to a messy house did it though - brought on that "I've had ENOUGH!" feeling full force. I really must establish some kind of cleaning routine. So for the rest of February, I'm going to commit myself to continuing with ATAD or FATAD, and to starting to work a simple chore list:

Sunday - grocery shop, 1 load of "household laundry" (i.e. bed sheets, rugs, dog beds, etc)
Monday - cat litter, vacuum (really, just turn on the Roomba and let it work), take out garbage/recycling, fill car with gas, do banking
Tuesday - 1 load of laundry, quick clean of bathroom or kitchen
Wednesday - evening group at work, so no chores
Thursday - cat litter, vacuum
Friday - proper day off - no chores
Saturday - cat litter, vacuum, 1 load laundry

No doubt I'll tinker with the plan over time, but I need to get more routinized about this or else I will continue to grimace when I walk in my house.

hello T!
I replaced our toilet seat and it makes a huge difference somehow. Makes the whole room, tiny as it is, seem fresher and cleaner.

Today's FATAD was spot cleaning my evening bag which had a drink spilled on it at the party last night. It came out perfectly and I am relieved!

fixed more sewing tasks (i though there were none anymore but... hmpf...) repaired two dog-bods, sewed a pillow case (it was a test, made from an antique linen tea towel that i wanted to replace soon. surprisingly, it turned out to look more than wonderful. i think i will wash it very hot and keep it.) and i sewed a shower curtain. sigh. i bought a new one and made a mistake, it was too long and not wide enough so i thought i might be a good idea to rotated it by 90 degree. if you ever think of doing that: don´t. gosh, such a lot of work for a *#'>@ shower curtain.

My DH did our FATAD last night: he bought and replaced two toilet seats. One was scratched and one was stained from a bleach-based cleaner -- it had weird whiter-than-white stripes where the cleaner had been squirted and we couldn't undo them nor could we successfully bleach the whole thing. The toilet seats weren't very expensive and they make the toilets look new. Tiny little improvement brings big satisfaction!

After living in our new house for a few months, we are beginning to get a feel for what we need to add or remove. Removing usually involves a shelf or two (the previous owner had an obsession I think) but there are no hooks anywhere. Today we have added another in the bathroom, right next to the shower - less dripping on the floor hopefully...

What is going on with my trousers, one pair have had the stitching at the waist unravel and I've just unwound the thread from another pair's leg from the rest of the washing out of the dryer. Adds to the mending pile, possibly to be done today, that has an unraveling jacket cuff already in it.
Sympathy to those dealing with chaotic kids rooms and various sick episodes, there is 'normal' life at the end of the parenthood tunnel, you just need to remember that whenever it all seems too much.

Ew, human sick is even worse than cat sick, clutterbug! Hope he gets over it soon, these bugs usually go pretty fast. I'm not going near the Rooms of Doom, the kids can at least get involved rather than think the Cleaning Fairy has visited whilst they were away :)
I'm going to spend an hour on the PhD thing, then investigate the bike situation.

Fixing kids bedroom floor today. DS has caught a bug, just in time for the Half-Term holidays!- and was sick last night so have been cleaning it up. @ Lottielot, honestly, I think we are living parallel lives in some aspects, what with bedrooms of doom, my ds throwing up and your cat doing the same in the cupboard drawer!!

Wow, regarding these 'putz' words, I suspect you have to careful in which context you use them or you could be causing offense in some cases, particularly Ella's definition!

Ella: I think this is a case where the German and the Yiddish differ. Probably some convoluted connection, though. To complicate, a putz in the German Moravian tradition (there are a lot of them in the area of Pennsylvania where I grew up) is a elaborate nativity scene erected in homes during the Christmas season.

@djk, et al: My FATAD actually involved planks of another sort today.

This afternoon I bought a new brand and strength of clarinet reeds and immediately fell in love with them. Then I sat down with a Swedish Frosts knife (super sharp carving blade), went through all the older reeds in my carrying case, and scraped down the heartwood of all the ones that sounded dull and stiff. I now have a case with 8 very playable reeds in it.

I swear, Astreja, you are amazing, and I'm always impressed by your sheer capability!

Littlecloud, Iove the German lesson! I'm sludging through German grammar and find it a challenge--this is a fun sentence for me to learn.

Er... all these clean German words... I'm confused.
Could somebody explain to me how the German definition got twisted into this Yiddish meaning...?

I first encountered the word putz in college, as used by my Jewish boyfriend. At first I thought that when he called someone a putz it was equivalent to calling them a turd. But he (and others) told me it's a Yiddish vulgarity meaning penis; so, for example, to say "what a putz" is like saying "what a dick(head)."

Then there's the verb futz, as in to futz around... that's idle messing around, wasting time, fiddling with something.

Another putzer here -- both parents grew up speaking German in Pennsylvania (but not PA Dutch.)

On Thursday the handy couple re coming to look over what needs to be done -- the kitchen light should arrive on Wednesday -- so the great backlog is about to become unjammed. I am so excited!

Anita: have you asked your landlord if he would refund you the cost of doing it yourself? It might get his butt in gear and tell him you're serious.

I'm going to jump in this thread as I have a random list of things to do. Today I took all of the expired paperwork/auto shop receipts from my car. Filing that which needs to be kept and shredding that which does not. Now I can find my current insurance and registration if needed.
