I resolved yesterday to move my computer desk and my sewing machine out of the front room and into my bedroom. It's simply not fair to my roommates for me to monopolize the front room from dawn to bedtime, sitting at the computer all day as I do. At the moment, the guys (gay couple) are spending evenings in their bedroom, watching Netflix on a tiny laptop screen. While I'm sitting in the front room typing. If I move computer command central into the bedroom, then we can buy a large-screen TV and they can move out into the front room while I sit in the bedroom and type.

This is going to be a decluttering challenge because my bedroom is already full of STUFF. A thousand books, twenty-year old dissertation materials, sewing supplies and projects. I've been telling myself for years that I'd digitize everything and finish up all the projects ... but that is proceeding at a glacial to non-existent pace. I realized that the only way I was going to force myself to confront it all was to live with it, uncomfortably.

All the stuff is clean, organized, and boxed or on bookshelves. It would not be a problem at all if I had a study and/or a sewing room. It would not be a problem if I had enough money to use the second bedroom as a sewing-room/guest bedroom. But because I'm poor, I rent out the second bedroom ... and that involves sacrifices, if I'm going to be fair to my roomies.

The other thousand books are going to stay in the front room because that's the only place I have to keep them. My roomies won't mind them. They're decor :)

We are expecting a second baby in February and could use some new ideas for organizing our space. Here is an album with pics of our room and current set-up: http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/Usagibuffy/Bedroom/ I could really use some help figuring out how to fit another (albeit little) person into our small space!

Some background: We moved in with my parents a year ago, the idea being to spend about 3 years with them while we pay off our debts and save for a house. DD is nearly 2 and will be 2.5 when the baby is born in February. Hopefully we'll be ready to buy a house around DD's 4th birthday, baby will be 17 months then. We don't have a lot of extra money to spend on stuff for our room, but will do what we need to to make our space livable. We also have a 6'x6' shed in the backyard for the things we didn't want to get rid of but didn't need inside.

We have the one room (about 10'x12') and closet (6' wide) for ourselves. DH has a desk in another room where we also have 2 more tall bookcases, and I have a little sewing corner in another room. DD has toys in the living room as well as the bedroom. She clearly has too many and I plan to clean them out before her birthday to cut down on the number, but she will need to have some in our room.

The set-up: We are a co-sleeping family, so in an effort to get more sleep (DD was waking us to get in our bed every night) we moved our mattresses to the floor. We love it, but it means no underbed storage space. Sometime before the baby comes, DD's mattresses (she sleeps on 2 stacked to bring her up to our level, but it doesn't have to stay that way) will be moved to the other side of the bed, where her toys currently sit. At first the baby's swing will be in the vacated spot, then we will either use one of DD's mattresses or get another mattress for the baby to sleep on.

We have a small antique dresser for DD's clothes and the new baby's clothes will fit in there as well. There is a taller dresser that has DH's and my clothes. DH has 3 drawers for socks/underwear, tshirts, and jeans/shorts/pajamas. I have 2 drawers for socks/underwear and pajamas/a few tshirts. Most of my tshirts are hung in the closet. I hate this dresser! DH feels obligated to keep it because it belonged to his grandmother (though it isn't an antique or heirloom or anything) but I may be able to convince him to get rid of it if we can come up with another solution for our clothes. On top of the small dresser are (mainly) an alarm clock I can't read from my bed, our digital photo frame, and DH's charging station. On top of the tall dresser we keep two bins with diaper supplies (we cloth diaper).

The shelves hold linens, videos, clothes DD hasn't grown into yet, the DVD player and VCR, and some other baby supplies. The closet is pretty full, with DH's work clothes (he has to wear a shirt and tie), DD's dresses, and most of my clothes. The shelf above the bar has 2 drawered bins with odds and ends, our board games, and blankets for the winter.

We also have 3 cats who are shut in with us at night, so we need the litterbox, and need it somewhere not easily accessible to kids. Currently we have a triangular covered box; the opening is on the hypotenuse which faces the corner of the square area it sits in. This keeps it accessible to the cats but out of DD's easy reach. She most leaves the box alone now, as we've trained her. The box needs to be replaced though, since the top is cracked.

We live in southern CA, where I've always been warned not to have my bed under a window or things above my bed in case they shatter/fall in an earthquake (though I'm somewhat skeptical; we rode out the 1994 Northridge quake with just a single broken knick-knack). This limits where we can have storage. Oh, and the furniture is bolted to the walls for our DD's safety but of course can be moved if someone has a better layout idea.

Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to give all the information possible so I can get some help. Mostly I'm concerned about how/where to put DD's toys. I'm also wondering if it would make sense at all to move her mattress onto our bed during the day so there is more room for playing. I have some ideas myself but need more! Thanks for the help!

How do you keep you toiletries tidy when you travel? I just got back from a weekend trip and was very frustrated because I couldn't find anything. I through all my stuff in one toiletries kit, but since everything is loose and small, it was a mess. The things I wanted together weren't together and I had to dig through everything to find them. Any solutions?

Herah on "Storing spiral notebooks?"

My daughters write stories.

Each story is in a separate notebook (some spirals, some composition books). Many notebooks are active -- the younger, in particular, has seven or eight stories in progress at any given time -- and the "inactive" ones still get pulled out all the time, either to edit or just to re-read.

Both girls have talent, and I think this may turn out to be a life's work for one of them. So I want to facilitate and encourage, not constantly gripe that "of course they'll get damaged if you have fifteen notebooks in your bed!"

I gave them three-ring binders with dividers and looseleaf, so they could keep the active ones all in one place, but apparently that doesn't work as well for writing on the schoolbus.

So: How do you store spiral notebooks for active access? They won't stand up in a bookshelf, they get tangled in a magazine holder, they won't stay stacked (even if they're on a nice steady shelf). What should we do?

I was browsing along the internet, when suddenly I came across this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAa6bOWB8qY&feature=player_embedded
And their website: http://www.resourcefurniture.com/
These furniture systems are amazing! Of course I didn't really see prices on their website, but they're probably astronomically expensive. Still though, seeing things like this makes me feel giddy. I want to live in a house where everything is perfectly functional, and there's no wasted space! What do you think of them?

Hello everyone!

As this is my first 'real' post in the forums I'll introduce myself a little. I'm on my 20s, living with my father, and from a family of clutterers-going-to-hoarders.
I've had it all- the hand me downs, the 'heirlooms', the 'keep it just in case', and 'what if one day'- name an excuse, I've likely gone through it and heard it before.
A mix of situations make it so that I can't currently move out of the house to have my own, and so I have to make do with where I live.

The problem? It has clicked in *my* brain that if I want to lead a happier, healthier and cleaner life (and be able to invite friends over!) I have to get rid of stuff. But it hasn't clicked in my father's brain.
My father has taken a "I want this cleaned out" stance, but refuses to actually move a finger, despite all the help I've offered, no suggestion on how to begin is good enough for him, so things have stalled.
I have, however, uncluttered a LOT of my stuff (three wardrobes of hand-me-downs, keep-in-case-you-need-one-day clothes have been gone through until all my clothes and shoes fit in only one. DVDs, books [we're both huge on reading], etc from my personal collection, including all VHS tapes, toys, plushes, have either been sold, given away, or gone to charity, etc).

Right now my main problem is the following:
I'm switching rooms, while trying to 'move in' fully into my own room. That is, so that I can't be blamed for the mess I haven't made as I am now, just because one thing is out of place, and so that I can find everything when I need it without having to sort through piles of stuff my dad has put on top of mine. I want to make of this my sanctuary, so then I can have a place to run to and relax when I try to tackle the rest of the house.

But since I'm trying to move in 20+ years of my life into a single room, it's been difficult.
I'm given roughly a 9x9ft room, if my conversion doesn't fail me (about 3x3mts); in it have to fit: My bedroom, my home office, and it also has to be a nice place for guests... because it's right by the entrance door.
Yes, my bedroom is the entrance to the house (though, that room still needs to be cleared out by my dad, who is being just a tad uncooperative).

I figured I can solve hiding the bed by making it into a sofa when it's not in use- I can't purchase new furniture so I have to make do with what I have. Making it a sort of futon/pull out bed solves the issue of the bed.
But I need ideas on how to properly "disguise" everything else.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to successfully incorporate a mini home-office into a bedroom, or something like that? I've looked at some student dorm solutions as it's more or less what I need, but nothing seems to inspire me, so I really need helps with thoughts of how to decorate and set up the place.
Or is my project impossible?

Me, my girlfriend and our pets are going to be moving from the south to the north in a little less than two months. We're planning to sell almost all our furniture (most of it was either cheap or secondhand; we're keeping the mattress because it was expensive, but unfortunately it's also large) and moving with the "u-box" service from U-Haul. Has anybody used them before? It seems easier than renting a truck and towing the car and cheaper than paying actual movers.

What's your best advice on what to keep and what to replace cheaply on the other end? Best packing tips? Anything you wish somebody had told you before you did something like this?

Also, anybody in Portland, OR? ;)

Hello! 2011 has been an incredible year for me on the uncluttering front - I have literally gotten rid of hundreds of bags of bags representing thousands of items, including not only surface clutter, but excess items from my cabinets, closets, and drawers. Even in my storage area, I'm down to five boxes (three of which contain seasonal/holiday items and two of which contain photo albums and other keepsakes). When I started, I had over 50 boxes.

For the most part, uncluttering has been very freeing. I love seeing the floors of my closets, and opening drawers knowing all the items in there are neatly folded or placed and readily available. I have been discarding without replacing anything but perishables, and even then, I have scaled back my food purchases to items I'm sure I will actually use in a given week or before the expiration date, rather than cramming my pantry cabinets, fridge, and freezer full of unnecessary items just so that I'll have "choices."

However, now that I'm just about done, I'm struggling with the decision regarding whether or not to replace a few worn-out items. First, I would absolutely love to replace all of my bedding. My pillows are stained and lumpy, both of my comforters are faded and ripped in places, and I think all my sheets have just absorbed too much body oil over the years, as they feel grimy within a day or two of washing. I've had this bedding for 5+ years, and used it with my now-ex-husband before we split a couple years ago (another reason I don't love it)! That being said, my bed is, overall, pretty comfortable, and after my typical 14+ hour workdays I'm exhausted enough to sleep just fine.

As I said, I'd love a bedding overhauls, including pillows, a couple new sets of sheets, and a pretty comforter set. I'd enjoy my bedroom much more - it's a small 8' x 10' alcove in my jr. one-bedroom basement apartment, so my queen bed takes up the majority of the space in the room. But, as I said, I don't really "need" these things, and I'm wondering if I'm just engaging in the rampant consumerism that plagued me in the past. Thoughts? If I got new bedding I'd definitely pitch the old bedding immediately, so no worries about clutter building up again.

My other question is regarding whether I should replace my five-year-old laptop. The DVD drive no longer works reliably, and a couple of the key covers are coming off, making it difficult to type (which is annoying because I need to work from home for a good number of hours each weekend). The hard drive is pretty small. That being said, it has a nice 17" screen and decent sound, so it's fine for listening to music, watching Netflix, and using the Internet. Given its age, I don't think it's worth repairing the keys and DVD drive. But again, I'm wondering if I should make do with it for a while longer and just deal with the keyboard annoyances.

Money isn't the issue with either of these things - just trying to balance my new uncluttered philosophy with the feeling that I ought to be able to have a few quality things that I will use daily and enjoy. Also, on a related note, I'm wondering if the bad feelings/annoyances about things that don't make me feel good or work well are also "clutter" that I should toss.

So, out with the old, and in with the new? Or out with the old, and for now, make do?

Hi Guys and Gals.

I'm brand-spankin' new to the forums. I've been wracking my brain for the last half a year on how to maximize my office room, with no luck. Its a 116x

Right now, it houses two gi-gunda computer desks, my treadmill and gym, gym equipment (all stored in the closet and big grey storage unit you can see in the pictures), two computers (three when my laptop is in) as well as a packed closet stocked with clothes, vacuum, and other miscellaneous for storage.

I'm getting new carpeting shortly, and when I pull everything out, I want a plan when I go to put it back together. I need lots of storage. I've thought about doing some sort of modern/clean storage mounted to the wall, but i can't envision the right things where. Please help with any ideas you may have.

Also, im not partial to these desks. I'd actually like to get something smaller as long as it's not a huge dive into my pocketbook. I've played with the idea of just one of those tables like in a computer lab, but i believe it would be too wide and take up most if not more of the room than the current desks do.

Thank you thank you thank you for any help you can give! :)

Pictures here:

Hiya,

This Friday I'm moving in with my inlaws. Now, I've never lived with them (and never expected to now!) so this will be an experience.

They are a bit hoarder-ish and I can not DEAL with that amount of clutter in 'my' space so my husband cleared out his old room (a box room) so that I can have some calm in the storm. For the time being he'll be in his sister's room until she comes home from university and gets rid of everything so that we can then have her room and the box room. (The likelihood of her EVER living in her parents house is minimal because she's going to uni in a different country and is getting married once she graduates to a very nice bloke who lives there as well.)

I'll upload some pictures of the box room once my husband comes home as they are on his camera.. I know I need to replace the wardrobe as it is falling apart and a few other things. But what suggestions do y'all have? I have what I consider a minimal amount of stuff but I'm sure I could get it down even more! I've been decluttering all week but the amount isn't really going down anymore.. Maybe I've finally reached a place where I have 'enough'?

Sigh.. I just want some inspiration. Or encouragement. Or even just a 'deal with it'...

I'm looking for furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc... Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I'm still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.

She didn't sweep or dust; the floor was covered with garbage and the drawers were full of dirt and dead cockroaches. She left behind most of her toiletries and food. The pillows were covered with hair grease and the pillowcases were ruined. Worst of all, she had been applying nail polish at the desk, and the desktop is ruined. Rings from the bottles of nail polish and nail polish remover. Plus lots of gouges and scratches. The top will have to be refinished.

At least I have a damage deposit.

What I find interesting is that she was filthy without being a hoarder. It's not that she couldn't bear to throw things out, it's just that she didn't bother.

Still cleaning. It's going to take a LONG time.

My original goal was to unclutter/minimalize until I could fit everything I own, minus my furniture into my car. While not having done a test run I think I have achieved that goal, now for my new goal.

Fitting everything I own into the back seat of my car, a two door hatch back.

Why this goal may you ask?

The car:
The two door hatch back is my preferred vehicle type, which I favor for its practicality as a commuter and a good work car. My current car is a 2 door hatch.

The limitation:
I devised the spatial limitation because there is the possibility I may relocate for a job. I want to be able to fit everything I own into my car and drive to my new location in one trip without having to rent a truck. I can do this already with one caveat. I have cats. Should the trip be short enough their cat boxes should suffice, if were to move out of state I would want the car trip for both of them to be comfortable.

Hence my new goal.

Thoughts?

I'm 20, and I live with my mom (and brothers) at home. I used to be a clean freak up until high school but then it all went downhill. Even though everything I own is contained to my bedroom, my room is just a wreck! I feel like I "declutter" all the time and get rid of things I don't need, but it's just too overwhelming and so my room NEVER has been organized. I guess I just don't know where to begin other than take it one item at a time with papers/books/clothes/letters/etc. but it would be years before everything is clean (alright, that might be a bit dramatic). I want to be able to find things and see my floor. I want to have a clutter free room but I don't even know where to start!

Any tips for how to start a decluttering project without getting overwhelmed??

I've had a pile of books/sheets/clothes sitting in a corner of my room for the last year or so, just waiting to be dealt with. Well over the last week a pipe burst under the heating element and there's water coming up from under the floor in that corner, and most of the stuff is ruined.

On the one hand, I'm irritated at myself for having that clutter (I might have noticed the leak sooner if it hadn't been there), but I suppose at least the decision is easier now!

And now I have an empty (and damp) corner until the leak is fixed!

Hi all -

After a lot of success with y'all's support last year, I fell off the bandwagon and the forums... managed clutter but not much progress in UNcluttering. So, here I am - new year, new resolutions, new obsession with Peter Walsh's Enough Already! Show on the OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

OK, so here's my ? I've been doing a lot of searching but can't seem to find what I would *think* is out there -

I have a big problem with trash and recycling on my side of the bed in my bedroom. Embarrassing to admit, but true. I tend to work sometimes in my bed, watch TV, snuggle with my daughters, etc. And, in doing so, I create trash (also b/c my dresser is about two and a half feet away) and recycling (I don't drink coffee so Diet Coke cans seem to multiply). And, I won't start with magazines I read, finish and then stack to say, "I'll move to recycling tomorrow." Nope.

I have a small trash can - tried a small recycling can too. It just doesn't seem to work, keep overflowing. Having the two separate means that one is also ripe for getting knocked over.

So, I would like something like this divided trash / recycling - could line up right next to my night table. Seems to hold enough but not be gigantic. only problem is the price is steep.
http://www.basketlady.com/Compact-Wicker-Waste-and-Recycling-Basket-p270.html

Anyone have any suggestions for something similar that is less $? If not, I'll go with "no price too great for uncluttering" philosophy but I thought it worth a try.

Thanks in advance!
Alexa

I'm trying to move my room around, and it's hard when I have big pieces of furniture to fit stuff everywhere. So i've decided to buy some of those plastic drawers, like from Wal-Mart that come in different colors. And take the clothes out of my dresser (which is just stuff like pajamas), and put them into one of those, and make a space for it in my closet. That way I can move the dresser out and have more room to work with. But i'm wondering how well it'll work. Has anyone done anything similar?

OK, I know the prevailing thought is that under the bed storage often turns to useless clutter, some you can't even reach, lots you should get rid of.

So my question is then - would you think you should strive for an EMPTY under the bed scenario? Maybe just luggage (a must in our house) and that's it?

I've got to tackle mine this year. The guest BR is a haunt of old things. I think there's a hat in there from 1998 - I'm sure that's still in style! ;-)

Just trying to figure out the best objective...thanks for your thoughts!

Hello everyone! I'm new here. Have been trying to declutter my room for a while now. I'll be moving out to go to college in a few months, and the clutter in my room is driving me crazy so I'd really like to narrow it down to just the minimal stuff I need. But I seem to have a problem.. I'm really motivated to clean and get rid of things as my room stresses me out when I compare it to other people's rooms I see that are neat and minimalistic. While I know that donating to thrift stores and such will help out people in need, I just have a really hard time giving all of my stuff away. I feel that if I knew I could get even $20 for a pile of my stuff at a yard sale, I would be much more motivated to get rid of things. Unfortunately we live quite a bit out of the way (no neighbors or anything) and it's not very practical for me to host a garage sale with just my stuff. But getting my parents to join in on a yard sale is nearly impossible. I asked them in the summer and they promised we'd have one, but they ended up backing out.
I keep putting off seriously cleaning out my room in hopes that we'll have a garage sale once the weather gets better. I hold on to things in hopes that I'll be able to get even $20 from of a pile of stuff eventually instead of just letting it go to a thrift store. I think "Oh, if I could get $1 for this I'd let it go, but if I have to just give it away I think I'd rather hold on to it." How do I get around this or make myself feel better about just giving things away? I've tried posting things on Craigslist, but I haven't had any responses. Should I just get over it and donate my things? Help! I mean I have things like a jacket that I bought for $40 and only wore a couple of times, and if I could get even $5 out of it I'd be much more willing to let it go than just donating it. I feel really selfish saying that, but I don't know, it's a huge block when I'm trying to declutter.
